IMG_3311After my life changing experience at Magnolia Bakery, I fell in love with cupcakes.  Not just the taste, but the experience I have when eating one.  I love how the sweet smell of sugar wafts up my nose and my lips get lost in the icing with each bite.  I love how the moist cake melts when it meets my tongue.  I love when I put just the right amount of batter in the cupcake liner so that it bakes just right up to the edge.  Then adding the perfect amount of icing so that I get equal amounts of icing and cake with each bite.  Cupcakes have become my guilty pleasure and my latest obsession.

As my cupcake obsession has grown, so has my quest to decorate every batch to look like they were made in a bakery.   Turns out, it’s not that hard or that expensive.  Here are a few things that will help take your cupcakes from homemade to haute from the oven!

The trickiest part of making a perfect cupcake is filling the liner with the right amount of batter without it dripping and making a mess.  I was in Marshall’s a few weeks ago and found this Cupcake Pen.  You fill it with the cake batter and then fill your cupcake liners with no drips or spills.  I can’t wait to try it with my next batch for my daughter’s birthday party in a few weeks.

The technique you decide to use to apply icing to your cupcakes can make a big difference in how they look.  I like to use the Wilton Dessert Decorator Plus.  It comes with a few different decorating tips and is very easy to use. Just screw on the tip you want, fill the tube with icing, and press the lever down to release the icing.  If you don’t want to spring for one of these, you can create your own piping bag to get a similar effect.  Just put your icing in a gallon sized plastic storage bag, cut off one of the bottom corners and gently squeeze to release icing.

You can use different types of sprinkles to top the cupcakes.  They come in all types, colors, and for every occasion.  You can also make beautiful designs using fondant, although I haven’t tried my hand at that yet.

There are tons of cupcake liners to choose from.  Most of the design ends up fading while they are in the oven, but I still like to choose liners that match the occasion.  I recently found some baking cups that claim that the design won’t fade during baking, eliminating the need for a cupcake wrapper.  But I haven’t tried them yet.

If I really want to dress up my cupcakes, I use cupcake wrappers.  You can find them online or at any store that sells cake decorating supplies.

Now that the cupcakes are all decorated, time to create a display.  Once you have decorated your table with your theme, you can use a tiered cupcake stand or cake stands
to display them.

I got this stand from HomeGoods about 5 or 6 years ago.  The original ribbon was black, but I change it depending on what I’m using it for.

  1. I know it is not a professional looking thing, but my mother in law makes a frosting that is dip-able (don’t know what word to use to explain that) and I love the way it looks. It is a flat look, but I enjoy it and it is not a HUNK of frosting on top. Sometimes a lighter cupcake is better.
